Maiduguri, 10 October, 2019 - Following the detection of a case of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in Jere Local Government Area (LGA) Borno State Nigeria, a team of surveillance officers, mostly comprised of men are dispatched by the Local Government to assess the situation.

They make a first stop at the home of Hajiya Liman Bello a mother of 3 and a housewife. As her husband is out of town, she peeps through the window to see who her visitors are.

Katsina, 9 October 2019 - As part of an effort towards eliminating Yellow Fever epidemics in Nigeria, the Government in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Gavi, and other key partners, officially commenced Phase 3 of its planned Preventive Mass Vaccination Campaign (PMVC) in Katsina State.

Abuja, 4 October, 2019 - In a bid to bolster immunity of eligible children, the Federal Government of Nigeria supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners immunized over 51 million children during the annual national immunization campaigns. 

The intervention conducted in phases, from 30 July-30 August 2019, reached 51,151,924 eligible children across 36 Nigerian states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This year’s theme ‘Rabies: Vaccinate to Eliminate’, focuses on ‘vaccination as the foundation of all rabies control efforts’ and highlights the need at individual and community level to ensure that dog vaccination should be considered a routine activity.

Abuja, 24 September, 2019 - An innovative technology using a mobile short message service (SMS)-based software is being used to improve the quality and sensitivity of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance in Nigeria. Known as AVADAR (Audio-Visual Acute Flaccid Paralysis Detection and Reporting), this innovative technology is greatly assisting health workers and key community informants to timely detect and report AFP cases.

Lafia, 20 September 2019 - In a primary healthcare centre in the suburbs of Nasarawa State, Nurse Ayenajeh Sasefu carefully arranges vaccines for various diseases adhering to Government guidelines for vaccine management.  

“These vaccines are very sensitive”, she says, as she arranges the different vaccines according to their temperature sensitivity within the cold storage equipment.  “We usually store these vaccines with caution because if not properly handled, its potency can be reduced”, she adds.
