External Assessment Team Applauds Response To Polio Outbreak in Nigeria.

Kaduna, 04 April, 2017 - The polio Outbreak Response Assessment (OBRA) team with representation from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partnership has congratulated the Nigerian government for the significant progress so far made in response to the 2016 polio outbreak. The commendation was contained in a presentation to government and partners during a debriefing meeting in Kaduna on 03 April 2017.

Borno Scales Up Preparedness for Meningitis Outbreak

Maiduguri, 11 April 2017 - Although, Borno has reported 22 suspected cases of meningitis in 2017, yet no case has been confirmed in the State. Preparedness measures to contain any outbreak have been put in place including prepositioning of additional 7000 doses of ceftriaxone, reactivation of Rapid Response Team, community sensitization and capacity building for surveillance focal points with support from World Health Organization (WHO).

Northern Traditional Leaders Rise For Holistic Approach Against Meningitis Outbreak

Kaduna, 11 April 2017 - Northern Traditional Leaders Committee on Primary Healthcare (NTLC), with support from the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), convened an emergency meeting with Governors of the 19 northern states and other stakeholders to discuss the management of the current outbreak of Neisseria Meningitidis serotype C. The major objective of the meeting aimed to devise holistic strategy to forestall fatalities and avert future occurrences.

Abuja, 25 April 2017 - In response to the theme of the 2017 World Malaria Day (WMD), ‘End Malaria For Good’ and slogan ‘’What’s your role’, Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole is calling for increased resources from government and private sector for the rapid elimination of the deadly disease.

Sokoto, 28 April 2017 - The release of 823,000  doses of meningitis vaccine to combat an outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) in Sokoto will protect  more than 800,000 people  across nine Local Government Areas (LGAs), the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kakale Shehu, says.  Sokoto is one of six states in Nigeria where the number of meningitis cases has passed the epidemic threshold during the ongoing outbreak.

Presidential Task Force on Immunization Renews Commitment to Polio Eradication

Abuja, 29 April 2017 - The Vice President, His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has urged State Governors to tackle polio with all the seriousness and commitment it deserves to ensure that the crippling disease is eradicated from Nigeria.

Addressing the Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication (PTFoPE) meeting in Abuja, Professor Osinbajo who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, emphasized the urgency, and strong commitment needed to complete the goal of polio eradication as rapidly as possible bearing in mind that it is major priority of the government.

WHO Nigeria Deploys Polio Personnel to Combat Meningitis Outbreak In Sokoto

Sokoto, 03 May 2017 - The World Health Organization (WHO) in Nigeria has deployed 190 Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) officers from various states and within WHO State Office to support Sokoto state government to control the outbreak of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM).

In the last two months, Nigeria has been experiencing widespread epidemic of Meningitis mainly caused by Neisseria meningitidis type C serotypes.  The states mostly affected by the epidemic are Zamfara, Sokoto, Kastina , Kebbi,  Yobe and Niger. Yobe has serotypes A and C.
