Personal Effectiveness Training Replicated in WCO Sierra Leone

Two staff members from WHO Sierra Leone that participated in a Personal Effectiveness Training Workshop in Brazzaville shared their experiences with their colleagues at the Country Office by replicating the training. Ms Hannah Yankson and Mrs Edith Gray together with staff from other Country Offices attended the workshops from 4 to 7 December 2012 organized by the Staff Devel-opment and Learning Unit at the Regional Office in Brazzaville, Congo.
The training was part of staff development programmes designed to give oppor-tunity to staff members of the Organization to enhance their personal compe-tencies and effectiveness for managing work and achieving results. It also aimed at assisting staff members to form a stronger team and strengthen their professional relationships with their colleagues at the workplace.
The training took into cognizance the role of every staff member in the success of the Organization as well as in overcoming challenges that require different range of skills and expertise. It focused on WHO core competencies such as knowing how to manage yourself; producing results; fostering integration and team work; communicating in a credible and effective manner. Emphasis was placed on the four dimensions of behaviour using the Personal Profile System. Practical sessions were held on how to use the personal profile system to im-prove on work and how to relate with colleagues to enhance team work.

Hannah described the opportunity as an “eye opener”. She said it exposed them to critical aspects of daily personal attributes which could have great im-pact on the outcome of actions and performances. “It was a great experience”, she added. When asked about her experience, Edith described the training in Brazzaville as “motivational and an incentive for effective productivity”.

The training is a critical component of confidence building and to capitalise on ones strengths, anticipate and minimize potential conflicts with others in order to make positive difference to the work of WHO.

The colleagues shared their experiences by presenting the training materials and facilitating group discussions.
