Samara, 20 April 2016 – The WHO Ethiopia Country Office (WCO Ethiopia) at the request of the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health conducted training on Early Warning Alert and Response System (EWARS) for the Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) focal persons at health center and district level.

Ethiopia launched emergency measles vaccination campaign on Friday April 22, 2016 targeting over 500 drought affected hot spot woredas in 10 regions (except AA) which includes Gambella; Benishangul Gumuz, Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR, Tigray, Afar, Somali, Dire Dawa and Harari.

The Ministry of Health, with support from partners launched the house to house polio National Immunization Days (NIDs) on Friday, 22nd of April, 2016 to vaccinate under five (0 – 59 months of age) children at national level. More than two years have passed since the onset of paralysis of the last case of WPV in January 05, 2014 and Ethiopia is currently polio free and this continued effort is to re-enforce country’s polio free status.

April 28th, 2017, Addis Ababa: The 7th African Vaccination Week has been officially launched in Ethiopia, in Fitche town-North Shoa Zone of Oromia region on April 24, 2017. The launching was very colorful attended by partners including GAVI, WHO, UNICEF, Core Group, PATH, CHAI, JSI/UI-FHS, Save the Children, CCRDA as well as by the national and local medias. Moreover, Dr. Sabrina CLEMENT, a representative from GAVI Geneva head quarter took part in this important event.

The Inter-governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has held a resource mobilization conference for the establishment of a regional cancer center of excellence in Addis Ababa to strengthen and enhance cancer services in its member states has been held at the UN-ECA Africa hall in Ethiopia on 20-21 April, 2016.

Substandard, spurious, falsely labelled, falsified and counterfeit (SSFFC) medical products pose an unacceptable risk to public health. SSFFC medical products affect every region of the world, and all major therapeutic categories of medicines, including vaccines and diagnostics. They harm patients and undermine confidence in medical products, healthcare professionals and health systems.

At a landmark Ministerial Conference on Immunization in Africa held from 24-25 February 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, African ministers of health and other line ministers signed a declaration to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against vaccine-preventable diseases and to close the immunization gap by 2020.

May 22, 2017 Addis Ababa: Conference on implementation and up-dating of the National Strategy and Plan of Action (NSPA) for pharmaceutical manufacturing development in Ethiopia organized by Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Health and World Health Organization to review the implementation of 2016 plan and up-date the NSPA Pharma.
