United Nations Mission Visits Flood Sites in North and Far-North Regions to Reinforce Assistance
Yaounde, 19 September 2012 -- The Acting Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Dr Charlotte Faty Ndiaye , WHO Representative leads a Joint United Nations Mission to the North and Far-North Regions of Cameroon from 19 - 22 September 2012, to visit the Flood Sites and meet with Local authorities to examine a reinforcement of UN assistance needed for the Affected Population already.
The UN Mission delegation will include the Representatives of the UN High Commission for Refugees, World Food Programme, World Health Organisation, UNICEF, United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Population Fund, United Nations Information Centre and UN Co-ordination Office.
The United Nations System in Cameroon responded immediately to an urgent request by Cameroon Government with the Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) conducted on August 27 2012 and prompted urgent actions, supply and assistance in the areas of Agriculture ; Food Distribution ; Health ; Nutrition ; Water Supply, Hygiene, Sanitation and Drainage ; Civil Defence/Disaster Management ; Education.
Emergency Response Fund
The United Nations System in Cameroon is working on an Emergency Response Fund of 1.1 million US Dollars in addition to the ongoing UN Joint Emergency Fund for Sahel crises region since January 2012 amounting to 4,798,922 US Dollars (approximately 2,555,493.340 FCFA)
These include:
- WFP providing general Food distribution for 25,000 of the flood affected people from September-November 2012.
- WHO preventing the risk of the occurrence of Cholera, malaria outbreaks and other water-bourne diseases, health facilities and medication.
- FAO will contribute in the agriculture sector distributing improved rice, maize, sorghum, millet and fertilizers.
- UNICEF would provide support in educational sector like school rehabilitation, provide school kits to students and teachers, deliver potable water, water treatment, sanitation facilities etc.
- UNHCR would provide tents for resettlement camps.
