4 February 2019
On 4 February 2019 and in recognition of World Cancer Day, WHO and global partners appeal to individuals, groups, communities and political leaders to embrace the important actions needed to stop cancer from being one of the leading causes of mortality globally. If current trends continue, the cancer burden in Africa is projected to double by 2040, to more than 2 million cases.
World Cancer Day is a compelling reminder of the necessity for:
- healthy lifestyle habits
- widely available and accurate information on the early signs and symptoms of cancer
- early and quality cancer diagnosis
- accessible quality treatment, including affordable health care.
With the theme, “I am and I will”, the 2019 World Cancer Day asks that we all, individually and collectively, resolve to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer as part of our commitment for universal health coverage and the larger push to leave no one behind.
