A Women Leader Received “Her Heart’s Desire”, i.e. COVID-19 Vaccine
In the fulfilness of time, Madam Amie Jobe received her heart’s desire- a lifesaving COVID-19 vaccine, at Kanifing Hospital on 19 March 2021. She commands a section of women in politics and she is a businesswoman in Bakau area, Western Region.
This wouldn’t have happened without the COVAX Facility. The COVAX facility ensures global risk-sharing mechanism for pooled procurement and equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.
The top priority population groups for COVID-19 vaccination are health workers, people 65 years of age & above and those with pre-existing health conditions. This criteria by Ministry of Health (MOH) is in line with World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) guidelines.
Madam Amie was eligible for the vaccine as she falls in the high-risk category for COVID-19.
“I am aged 67 years. I also live with a chronic health condition. This puts me at risk of COVID-19 complications if infected with the virus,” stated Madam Amie.
Madam Amie couldn’t hide her joy after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Madam Amie tells other women that the COVID-19 vaccine provides light at the end of tunnel.
“I have keen interest in business and I am also a politician. COVID-19 affects every person and business activities has been affected globally and in The Gambia. My business trips to China were cut due to lockdown restriction in movements owing to the pandemic,” said Madam Amie.
Madam Amie indicated that COVID-19 vaccine is a safe way out among other public health measures which will help in protecting her family and community from COVID-19.
“Two of my daughters are also medical doctors and they encouraged me to take the vaccine, since it is safe and effective. Today I came with my other daughter, Dr Saffie Jammeh- who also took her COVID-19 shot. I was taught very well to continue social distancing, practise handwashing with soap at all times or use hand sanitisers and to always properly wear my facemask.”
Women’s health is influenced by the choices made by fellow women in positions of power. Madam Amie urges those eligible according to Ministry of Health, criteria especially women to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
“As a business woman and leader of women’s league, I encourage all people living with chronic medical conditions and those 65 years and above to get their COVID-19 vaccine at nearest health centre”, said Madama Amie.
Mammy Camara, Senior Nursing Officer at Kanilai Health Centre urges women to get COVID-19 vaccine when its offered to them. “I am opting to take the COVID-19 vaccine. It has positive benefits. I urge all eligible women to take the vaccine to protect themselves and their families,” said Mammy Camara.
The Republic of Gambia seeks to ensure that women equally benefit from the COVID-19 vaccine. This position was demonstrated by the Vice president, HE Dr Isatou Touray when she became the first woman to be vaccinated against COVDI-19. Eligible women should be on the forefront to receive their COVID-19 vaccines to protect themselves and keep everyone safe.
