This important workshop was officially opened by the Director General of Medical Services, Mr Berhane Gebretensae on behalf of Hon. Minister of Health. In his remarks, he underlined the SDGs and UHC’s unique perspective and approach that requires a serious multi- and inter-sectoral engagement. He underscored the efforts of Eritrea in developing the five-year health sector strategic development plan focusing on health security and conceptualization Universal Health Coverage.

Eritrea Marked World Diabetes Day 2017

World Diabetes Day 2017 was observed in Eritrea on 14 November 2017 nationally in the port city of Assab and in all zobas with the theme entitled: "Our right to a healthy future" as a diabetic week.  In this very important commemoration day the officials from the MOH Southern Red Sea, Administrator of Southern Red Sea, Directors of health services of the MOH and Chairperson of Diabetic Association, WHO staff and faith based organizations were present. The commemoration was officially opened by the Eritrean National Diabetes Association (ENDA).

Training on Malaria Elimination Surveillance

WHO in collaboration with the Ministry of Health conducted training at Orotta Hospital conference Hall in October 2017 for participants from all districts (zobas), head offices, Malaria programme staffs, Health Management Information System (HMIS) and WHO staff.

This year World Aids Day was launched on December 1, 2017 in the beautiful port of Massawa at Cinema Aida with the theme entitled: “Right To Health”.  Everyone with the Right to realize the highest attainment standard of Health without Stigma and Discrimination’.

WHO Eritrea Country Office Assumes a Functional Review: 11-15 December 2017

Asmara, 11 December 2017 - The time had reached for WHO Eritrea Country office for the functional review exercise to undertake; starting from December 11, 2017. The six-days exercise was part of the WHO transformation agenda (2015-2020). The purpose of the functional review is to ensure the Country Office has adequate and appropriate workforce to support Eritrea’s health priorities. Eritrea WHO Country Office is the 15th to be reviewed among the 18 countries scheduled for this year.

Antibiotics Awareness Week Launching ceremony

In line with the World Antibiotic Awareness Week, Eritrea launched its first antibiotics awareness week campaign this year (13th – 19th November). The ceremony was held on November 13, 2017 at Orrota National Referral Hospital Conference Hall.

Hospital Managers Training

The tenets of the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) underscore the critical nature of having mechanisms to ensure effective health facility management strategies and systems to assure quality of service. It is in line with these objectives that the training of the hospital managers was conducted, following the training needs assessment in September 2017. From this assessment, 17 topics were selected that were deemed as high priority.  

Eritrea - Health Facility Standards Validation Workshop

The WHO Country Office and MOH had organized a validation workshop on health facility standards on 7 September 2017 at the Conference Hall of Nyala Hotel in Asmara. The national standard aims to give a shared voice to the expectations of the public, service users, and service providers.

Eritrea Launched the Health Sector Strategic Development Plan II (HSSDP II) 2017-202...

The Launching of the second Health Sector Strategic Development Plan (HSSDPII) was held on 2 June 2017 at Orotta National Referral Hospital Conference Hall. The development of the HSSDP II for Eritrea for the period 2017-2021 was led by the Ministry of Health, with the participation of other Government Sectors, Partners and relevant stakeholders. In it’s formulation, recommendations from the mid-term review previously conducted on key achievements and challenges during the implementation of the HSSDP I and health sector situation analysis were used.
